Open right return — common questions
For the open right return, bring your stair count + 2 setup planks + 1 extra plank per 6 stairs for the return caps. For a 12-step staircase: 12 + 2 + 2 = 16 planks. We'll confirm the exact count after reviewing your order.
A mitered return cap is a piece of your flooring that wraps around the exposed end of the tread. It covers the raw cut edge and wraps down the side so there is no visible MDF, fiberboard, or raw material showing on the open side of the stair.
No — when done correctly, the mitered corner is tight and nearly invisible. Since both pieces are cut from the same plank and the same dye lot, the grain and color match across the corner. The finish looks like a single continuous piece.
Mixed configurations are handled case by case. Use the order quiz and note in Step 6 which stairs are different. Victor will confirm the kit for each individual stair when he calls to confirm.
If the end of the tread is fully hidden behind a baseboard or newel post, you may not need a return cap. Flag this in the notes field of the quiz and send a photo — Victor will advise.
