Return Risers for open staircases.

The vertical face of a stair step — the riser — needs to be finished on its exposed side just like the tread above it. A return riser wraps around the open end of the step, enclosing the vertical face that is visible from the room. It always works in tandem with a return tread to create a fully finished open-stair step.

The component

Finishing the vertical face on the open side of the step.

On a standard enclosed staircase, risers span wall to wall — their ends are hidden inside the stair structure. On an open-sided stair, the end of each riser is exposed to the room. A return riser wraps that exposed end with a mitered or coped piece that returns to the wall or balustrade post, enclosing the riser edge cleanly. Without it, the end of the riser is raw and unfinished regardless of how well the rest of the stair looks.

Function

Encloses the exposed riser end

The return riser covers the visible end of the vertical stair face on the open side, finishing the edge so the step reads as complete from every viewing angle.

Pairing

Always installed with a return tread

The return tread covers the horizontal surface and the return riser covers the vertical face. Together they fully enclose the step on its open side. One without the other leaves part of the step unfinished.

Material

Painted or finished to match

Return risers are typically painted white or finished in a contrasting color to complement the tread. Matching stained risers are also possible depending on material and finish preference.

Finish options

Painted white, stained wood, or primed for paint.

Return risers give you a finish choice that standard enclosed risers rarely require you to make deliberately. On an open stair, the riser end is visible — so the decision about material and finish becomes a design detail rather than an afterthought. FIR reviews the finish options during the estimate so the return riser coordinates with both the tread material and the room's palette.

White painted

Classic contrast

White painted risers paired with wood-tone treads is the most common combination for residential staircases — clean, classic, and easy to maintain.

Stained wood

Matching the tread

For an all-wood stair look, risers can be stained in the same or complementary tone as the tread. Works best in hardwood or engineered hardwood stair systems.

Primed board

Ready for your paint color

If the homeowner has a specific wall or trim paint color, risers can be installed primed and painted on-site to match — ensuring the riser coordinates exactly with the surrounding millwork.

FAQ

Common questions about return risers.

Do I need return risers on every open-sided step?

Yes — every step that has an open side needs both a return tread and a return riser to be fully enclosed. If only some steps on the staircase are open-sided, only those steps need returns. FIR identifies the exact steps during the estimate.

Can return risers be painted a different color than the wall?

Yes. Return risers are typically finished with the same paint as the other risers on the staircase — usually white or a trim color. They can be painted any color, but the most visually cohesive result is one that makes the return read as part of the stair rather than a separate patch.

Are return risers structural?

No. Risers are a finish component — they cover the vertical face of the stair but do not carry structural load. The stair carriage (stringer) is the load-bearing element. Return risers are installed for appearance and to enclose the step, not for structural support.

What material are return risers made from?

Return risers are typically solid wood (poplar or pine) finished with paint, or hardwood to match the tread in a stained installation. MDF is used in some painted applications. FIR selects the material based on the desired finish and the other stair components being installed.
